Aire Waves

Leeds Canoe Club Blog. We paddle... lots!
Airewaves used to be Leeds Canoe Club's magazine letting people know what the club was upto. Its quite hard work pulling together a publication letting people know what the club is doing and publishing dates in advance is always hard as things tend to change. Step forth the blog.. Push button publishing for the masses. So here is the idea a few people in the club take it in turns to write up trips and talk about things in the club.

Andy at the Burrs

Found this picture of Andy on the Yorkshire Region website. Must have been before he bought his own boat!

CST

Yesterday the club ran a CST course for some of our two star paddlers. Its a good course as it covers lots of safety aspects which alot of people just ignore.

CST - a victim's view

Seven of us - me, Tanya, Andy H, Andy D, Becki, Sarah, and Phil (hereafter The Magnificent Seven?) - did the Canoe Safety Test on Sunday, and Nick came along with the intention of observing but ended up joining in.

We started, bright and early in the lecture room at the rugby club, with a couple of hours theory. This wasn't the painfully dull experience I thought it might be. With such a small group it was easy to cover material relatively quickly, and John Lucas, the trainer/assessor, made it interesting.

After a short lunch break it was straight into the practical, followed by the assessment. We all spent a fair amout of time in the water, the 'all-in-rescue' was particularly amusing...as we drifted toward Boomer. A variety of craft were used, including a Canadian and a Topo Duo. Ever tried emptying either of these, single handed, over the bow of your kayak? Nice to see John Lucas has a sense of humour.

Physically exhausted, we finished around 5ish, and were told that we'd all passed. Lots of happy, smiling faces all round.

Personally I found the CST a rewarding experience for a number of reasons. Firstly and most obviously, I now know how to rescue people and boats on flat water. More importantly, I have the confidence to do it. The course has also given me more confidence on another level. I'd say that I've always tended toward being a nervous paddler. After spending a day falling out of, and climbing back into, my boat I feel much more comfortable on the water. I would strongly recommend the CST to anyone. Even if you think you know it all, perhaps you don't, and if you do, well, a bit of practice can only be a good thing. We all need to practice our throw lines, members old and new, that's for sure!

Thanks to John Lucas for running the course, John Arm of Leeds Rugby for providing excellent indoor facilities, the other members of The Magnificent Seven for your enthusiasm, support and humour, Nick for being a constant source of amusement and advice, and Eddie for providing much needed doughnuts during the afternoon.

The club plans to run another CST course at the end of the summer.
