Leeds Canoe Club Blog. We paddle... lots!
Airewaves used to be Leeds Canoe Club's magazine letting people know what the club was upto. Its quite hard work pulling together a publication letting people know what the club is doing and publishing dates in advance is always hard as things tend to change. Step forth the blog.. Push button publishing for the masses. So here is the idea a few people in the club take it in turns to write up trips and talk about things in the club.
Yet again another dry trip to the lakes. But not to worry Leeds Canoe Club manages to run a great trip yet again. Around 40 people attended the weekend, one of our biggest trips yet. The Crake was the main river for Saturday. This gave a few people their first experince of proper rivers and got them to play on waves and run small drops. While the Crake was pretty low it provided enough fun on the way down to the sea. Greg and Glen took to playing on the waves with easy.
At the end of the run was the last good rapid in Spark Bridge. Everyone was waiting for us there. The more keen in the group bundled their boats onto a couple of cars and headed off to the Kent. As we were short on time we got on at Natland cutting out the scrape up stream. The Kent was low but didn't disapoint, we rattled down force falls just as it was getting dark. Off into town for a curry and a few beers.
Sunday still no rain.. No real suprise. However we were off to the Leven to paddle on the section which was open for the agreement. It had been pretty cold over night and alot of boats had ice in them and anyone unlucky enough to leave kit in the boats found it to be frozen. About 30 of us got on a low looking Leven. However the waves were at a great level for everyone to play on. Greg swam on one of the waves but was straight back on again once the boat was empty.

After we had run the Leven a few of us went to have a look at BackBarrow bridge jsut down stream. I think this will be a project for another day when there are less people and more water and the large rock at the bottom of the drop looked a little worrying.
Off to the Kent again after lunch. As we had checked it out on Saturday alot more people went on the river as we knew it going to be ok. Andy had told me about a channel which ran down the side of the Kent which had a small drop at the bottom. I had seen this in the past but wasn't sure if it was runable. Andy assured me it was so I had a go on the way down to the falls at Natland bridge. Everyone else had a go but Greg managed to get his boat pinned.

We paddled the broken weir without any incident. Then on to the last few drops. As things were low it made picking lines a bit easier in places. Force falls just took you regardless of what you actually wanted to do. I think Nick however got to the right a bit more than he expected an landed with a bump. The people who were new to running the Kent all came off with a smile. I think after this a few of our beginners are no longer beginners.
